How to get to Lucky Bay
The first step of your adventure to see the famous Lucky Bay Kangaroos is getting to Cape Le Grand National Park. Lucky Bay is found nestled within the national park, around 60 kilometres from the town of Esperance in Western Australia.
It takes around 40 minutes to drive from Esperance to Cape Le Grand National Park, and then another 10-15 minutes from the park entrance to reach Lucky Bay itself. There is no public transport from Esperance to the national park, so you will need to have your own transport to get there.
If you don’t have your own vehicle then you will need to rent a car in order to get to Lucky Bay to see the kangaroos. Thankfully, it’s easy to find great deals on the Rental Cars website as they compare between operators to get you the best price.
If you aren’t already in Esperance, you will need to get there before heading to Lucky Bay. Getting to Esperance means either taking a road trip and driving yourself there, or catching a regional flight from Perth.
Flights to Esperance are only possible from Perth, so if you want to fly from elsewhere in Australia you will need to fly to Perth and get a connecting flight to Esperance. Where to stay in Lucky Bay and Esperance
Lucky Bay Campground
If you want to wake up to the Kangaroos at Lucky Bay beach, you will need to stay at the Lucky Bay Campground. For those travelling around Western Australia by campervan this is the perfect option, allowing you to camp under the stars right by Lucky Bay!
There are 56 unpowered sites available at the campground, and some facilities like gas barbecues, dishwashing sinks, tables, benches, and toilets. These unpowered sites are suitable for campervans, motorhomes, or tents. Booking is essential to get a spot at the Lucky Bay campsite, and prices to camp are $15 AUD per adult and $3 AUD per child – with this cost being in addition to the park entrance fee of $15 AUD per vehicle.

If the Lucky Bay campground is fully booked or you would rather stay elsewhere, then there are some good accommodation options in Esperance. Tips for visiting the Lucky Bay Kangaroos
Visit in the morning or late afternoon – Kangaroos are nocturnal so if you visit in the morning or later afternoon you have a better chance of seeing them roaming along the beach at Lucky Bay.
Don’t feed the kangaroos – Human food can be harmful to kangaroos and can change their natural behaviour, so please avoid doing this!
Keep your distance – Although the kangaroos at Lucky Bay are generally unfazed by the presence of humans, remember that they are wild animals. Give them plenty of space so they don’t feel intimidated or threatened, and avoid touching them.
Explore Cape Le Grand National Park – There are plenty of other great attractions in the national park, including Hellfire Bay, Frenchman’s Peak, and Thistle Cove. Once you’ve seen the kangaroos at Lucky Bay, make sure to visit some of these other breathtaking spots.
