Situated in south Catalonia, the stunning Ebro Delta is home to a thriving population of flamingos. The delta is known for its brilliant birdlife, with a variety of both resident and migratory species found in the area. This large wetland has a number of lagoons where flamingos can be seen, and there is plenty more beautiful nature to discover. When are the Flamingos in the Ebro Delta
Flamingos live in the Ebro Delta all year round, and so they can be seen here at any time of year. They have lived in the area since 1992 when a colony of greater flamingos made the delta their home.
Winter is a particularly good time to see flamingos in the Ebro Delta, as large flocks of these birds can be seen in various locations. They are most often seen feeding in the waters around the delta, searching for small crustaceans which make up their diet.
Flamingos get their famous pink colour from their diet, and it can take 2 or 3 seasons for their colour to fully develop. For this reason you may also see some grey juvenile flamingos around the Ebro Delta that are yet to develop their pink colour.

The easiest way to get around Delta Del Ebro once you have arrived in L’Ampolla will be to take a taxi, which is why we recommend driving yourself if possible. Prices for a train to L’Ampolla depending on the service you take, but tend to be around €15 to €20 from Barcelona or Valencia.

Where to see Flamingos in the Ebro Delta
La Tancada Lagoon
La Tancada Lagoon is one of the best places to see flamingos in the Ebro Delta. It’s the lagoon with the highest density of flamingos, and has three viewing areas so you can observe the area’s impressive birdlife.
The most popular lookout points is the La Tancada Observatory (Observatori de La Tancada), from which you can often see flamingos. It’s also possible to see flamingos fairly regularly from both La Tancada Lookout and La Tancada Lookout (Raimundo), both of which are also known as Mirador de la Tancada.
There are several other bird species that can be observed at La Tancada Lagoon, including spoonbills, sandpipers, cormorants, and more. Of course the flamingos do steal the show somewhat, but make sure to have some binoculars with you as you might only see them from a distance.
La Tancada Lagoon is an unmissable spot for anyone hoping to see the flamingos of the Ebro Delta, as the high flamingo population gives you a great chance of sightings!
Refugi de pescadors del Goleró
The Refugi de pescadors del Goleró is a walking area along the beachfront in a section of the delta. As you walk along this beachfront area you have a reasonable chance of spotting the famous flamingos of the Ebro Delta as they feed in the waters.
We spent two weeks staying in the nearby town of L’Ampolla, and walked here every day during our stay. Over the course of two weeks there were only two days that we didn’t see flamingos in the sea here.
Of course the numbers varied from day to day, but we did have consistent sightings of flamingos in this area of the Ebro Delta. Not only that but we also saw other interesting birdlife, from kingfishers to cormorants.
Flamingos can also be seen in this area of the Ebro Delta in the Bassa de les Olles lagoon. There are some miradors/observation decks around the lagoon and along the beachfront, so make use of these when trying to look for flamingos in the delta.
Free parking is available near to Restaurant Lo Goleró, and there is space to park along the road leading there if the parking area is full. Click here to see the exact location of the parking on Google Maps!

Mirador del Zigurat
Mirador del Zigurat is one of the best viewpoints of the Delta del Ebro, overlooking the mouth of the River Ebro as it flows into the sea, the Garxal Lagoon, and more. As well as offering scenic views of the delta’s beautiful nature, it is also possible to spot flamingos from this panoramic viewpoint.
Also known as the Tower of Babel, this unique wooden viewing platform allows you to see quite some distance. If you are lucky enough to observe flamingos from this viewpoint then you may find they are some distance away, so it’s best to bring binoculars with you for better views.
Flamingo sightings here can be somewhat inconsistent, with flamingos more commonly seen at some of the other places in the Ebro Delta that we have mentioned above. Thankfully the views make it a lovely spot to visit regardless of flamingo sightings, as it’s one of the best places to enjoy the stunning nature of the delta.
Access to the viewing platform is completely free, but it can get busy at the top. Ideally you will want to visit on a clear day so that you have the best possible chance of spotting flamingos nearby.

The MónNatura Delta de l’Ebre is one of the best places to see flamingos in the delta. This nature centre boasts a 360° viewpoint equipped with telescopes, which allows you to get some amazing views of flamingos and several other bird species.
It’s possible to visit the centre on a self-guided or guided tour, and there are a range of activities and tours to choose from. In terms of seeing flamingos at the Ebro Delta, two of the best tour options are the dedicated flamingo tour or the birds of the delta tour.
